My Artwork
All artwork is property of Nicki Ditch. Please credit my name & website if you choose to share it.
As a psychology major and a Mental Health Counseling student, I am very much aware of the power of words and the pros and cons of all types of communication. My artwork is very personal in nature and most often depicts aspects of communication; things I have said, have heard, or wished I had said. I also address the drawbacks of communication via technology and the impact that substituting face-to-face communication with emails and text messages has on relationships, intimacy, and personal growth.
Sculptured Books

Sculptured Book titled “Ingrained.” Made from a mold of my face, depicts the things people have said to me while I was caring for them or their loved oned on ambulance calls; things I think will stay with me forever.

The inside of the head includes images similar to those I have seen on calls; some gruesome, some comforting.

“DSMatize Me”
My sculptured book telling my feelings about the DSM.
The DSM is the Psychology Bible and although I understand its usefulness at times, I hate the thing. I believe it overshadows the humanism in the field of counseling. This book is MY interpretation of the book’s interpretations. I suspect if I were to be officially diagnosed using this book as a guide, I would look something like this.

Book On Communication

Depicting how technology is slowly stripping us of closeness, authenticity, and intimacy and leading us to distance and isolation.

Paintings

This is my biggest painting yet (4′ x 5′). Sunset done for my friend’s living room. Acrylic on canvas

“Isolated” My painting about how technology is replacing vital face-to-face interactions. I hate that the quality of these pics is so bad and I will replace them soon.

Letting Go. My first painting in my Intro class. Reflects my desire to hold on to my little girl and the need to let her go as she nears adulthood. Acrylic on canvas (had a working pendulum attached to the bottom of the piece during the critique to show that time is constantly moving forward and there is no turning it back).
Drawings

I finished my latest drawing today and I am very excited!! It is a gift for a friend of mine. The butterfly is a tattoo she has on her breast.

Touched. Represents how I have touched the lives of my patients and how they have touched mine. Charcoal on paper

Things I’ve Heard. Again, relating to the things people have said to me on calls only this time, in a drawing. Charcoal on Paper
